4/25/24 Humane Action Pittsburgh Facebook post: We are delighted to announce that Humane Action Pittsburgh has received the 2024 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence! The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recognized 22 projects, highlighting innovative efforts by schools, businesses, and community organizations statewide to protect our environment and foster sustainability. Our project, the Swissvale Community Pollinator Garden, in collaboration with the local municipality, transformed a 12,000-square-foot vacant lot in Pittsburgh into a vibrant space. Featuring native plants for pollinators, the garden also hosts community events and educational activities for residents of all ages. Thanks to the Office of the Governor of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for this honor, and Representative Abigail Salisbury and Senator Jay Costa for their support and collaboration!

1/4/23 Urban Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County: The 2024 URA Sponsorship Program opens in 5 DAYS! If your business or organization needs a sponsor for an event this year, consider applying for a URA sponsorship of up to $7,500. The URA is accepting applications from Monday, January 8, 2024 to Friday, March 8, 2024.
1/4/23 Abigail Salisbury Facebook post – Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.  The Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator grant program provides creative entrepreneurs with small business consulting and up to $2,000 in critical financial resources to grow businesses and revenue. Fifty-one percent of the funds available for distribution in this program have been reserved for Black, Indigenous, or persons of color (BIPOC), or individuals residing in communities identified by the Small Business Administration’s low-income communities map. The Arts Council administers this grant on behalf of the PA Council on the Arts for Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, and Washington counties. Grant applications for the Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator Program are open from January 1, 2024 and close on February 16, 2024.

Additionally, the URA’s office at 412 Boulevard of the Allies will be closed Tuesday, January 2 through Friday, January 5, 2024, but staff will be working remotely and ready to assist clients that week.

11/13/23 Wilkinsburg Penn-Joint Water Authority – Temporary Office Closure and System Upgrade Notice: Please be advised our main office will be closed on Friday, December 1, and Monday, December 4 for a system upgrade. Representatives will be available to take your calls for customer service inquiries and emergencies. As part of this upgrade, our online payments will be unavailable for a portion of the day on Monday, December 4. If you need to make a payment in person, please use our 24-hour drop box located near the drive-through window. Due to the inconvenience of this closure, there will not be any water service terminations for nonpayment scheduled on these dates. Our office will reopen on Tuesday, December 5 at 8:00 a.m. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we navigate these changes.

11/6/23 Senator Jay Costa Facebook post LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) Open Enrollment – If you’re having trouble paying your utility bills through the cold winter months, you may be eligible for a grant to help. These grants range from $300 to $1,000 based on household size, income, and fuel type. Remember: This is a grant and does not have to be repaid. To be eligible for Pennsylvania’s LIHEAP Crisis Cooling Pilot, a renter or homeowner needs to have already received some form of LIHEAP or weatherization assistance in the past 12 months. These programs are reserved for Pennsylvanians living at 150% or 200% of federal poverty income guidelines, respectively.
If you qualify, you could get two Energy Star-rated room air conditioner units or one unit and a fan, repair or replacement of your existing but broken central air conditioning system, or repair or replacement of your existing but broken heat pump.
Staff or contractors with your local weatherization agency will install the equipment for you.
To participate in the program, find the letter confirming you have received LIHEAP or weatherization assistance in the past year, then reach out to your local weatherization agency, as the application process may differ among agencies, state officials said.

The Whole Home Repair program through Action Housing has kicked off. These are ARPA funds that will pay up to $50,000 for home repairs for low income property owners. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. I Please assist in getting this information to qualifying homeowners that could use the help. They will need to create an account, and complete the information on the application; it is a 7 step process.
Time is of the essence!!

Did you know that a new law protecting pregnant people at work has just taken effect? On June 27 the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act went into effect.
