COMING SOON – POWER (PA Organization for Women in Early Recovery) Headquarters – More than 23 million Americans suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction, but only 11% receive treatment. Women are the fastest-growing segment of substance users in the United States, with an estimated 2.7 million women abusing drugs or alcohol. Most women (66-90%) in treatment report histories of trauma, which may include domestic violence, early childhood sexual assault, physical abuse or neglect, loss of a child, or other traumatic experiences. Our staff is trained to understand the impact of trauma on recovery and our care reflects that understanding. POWER offers a full range of gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment and support services just for women. We believe that empowering women leads to healthy families and strong communities. Research shows that a woman is most successful with her recovery when the care she receives is holistic, strengths-based, and addresses issues like trauma, parenting and childcare, relationships, health and wellness, education, employment, and housing. To further our mission and transform the way women access substance use treatment and recovery support services in our region, we are creating the POWER Campus. Through a $14 million capital campaign we are renovating a building, located on the same grounds as our POWER House residential treatment facility in Swissvale. All levels of care will be in one location and partners on the ground floor will offer childcare, healthcare, and workforce development. The POWER Campus will be the first facility of its kind in Allegheny County and become a national model for other cities to improve their response to drug and alcohol problems.
