Metal Arts Internship Application Open – Rivers of Steel

Inspired by the legacy of iron-making at the Carrie Blast Furnaces, Rivers of Steel’s Metal Arts program offers educational workshops, public demonstrations, and team-building experiences highlighting foundry work, along with blacksmithing programs.

June Internship Timeline:
June 24 – June 29, 2024.
Daily workshop hours – 11:00a – 7:00pm
June 29, 2024 – Iron Pour noon – 8:00pm (actual times may vary)
June 30, 2024 – Clean-up foundry/workshop, pick up artist work. – 10:00am – 4:00pm
June 30 & July 1, 2024 – Assist ROS staff with facility clean up, merchandise finishing/chasing.

October Iron Casting Workshops. Visiting Artist Addy-Smith Reiman and Josh Reiman from Maine College of Art and Design Sculpture Department
This workshop overlaps with the Festival of Combustion at the Carrie Blast Furnaces. Workshop participants will cast their work in a large iron pour during the festival on October 5, 2024!
October Internship Timeline:
Sept 30 – Oct 8, 2024.
Daily workshop hours – 11:00a – 7:00pm
October 5, 2024 – Iron Pour during Festival of Combustion. noon – 8:00pm (actual times may vary)
October 6, 2024 – Clean-up foundry/workshop, pick up artist work. – 10:00am – 4:00pm
October 7 & 8, 2024 – Assist ROS staff with facility clean up, merchandise finishing/chasing.

Internship Details:
Interns are provided a material stipend totaling 600lbs of sand and corresponding chemical for the creation of person artworks during their internship period. In exchange for free access to the studio space, intern artists work for Rivers of Steel Arts at least 5 hours every day. Interns are expected to work on their personal artworks outside of this five-hour period. The type of work you can expect during this time includes:
• Prepare scratch molds for public workshops & product molds
• Chase merchandise cast by the Metal Arts program
• Set-up and organize the studio
• Prepare the furnace and break iron (if necessary)
• (September only) Facilitate scratchblocks including prep, workshop, pouring, and cleaning up during the Festival of Combustion.
• Clean-up the workshop and foundry area following the workshop.
Travel & Accommodations: Intern housing is provided by Rivers of Steel nearby the furnaces for a daily fee of $25 (total $200 for 8 days). Interns are welcome to make alternate lodging arrangements at their own cost, but the $25/daily fee is required regardless. Interns must fund their own travel to/from the Carrie Blast Furnaces.
