3/16 Flags are very important throughout history, and on the battlefield. The recognition of flags and heraldry in battle can be seen on the medieval battlefields of Europe. So, this month We are going to discuss flags, and design our very own flags. Flags have symbolism to represent the unit, country, or person they are supposed to embody. So, after a discussion of important flags from the past, children will get the chance to design a flag that represents them or their family. This program is paid for through a grant from U.S. Steel – Edgar Thompson Works and is free for participants! The program itself is geared towards children 5 – 12 years old. (3) History is Fun – Flags | Facebook

2/17 Lucet Chord Braiding – A lucet is a tool used in cordmaking or braiding which is believed to date back to the 11th century Norse and Medieval time periods, when it was used to create cords that were used on clothing, or to hang items from the belt. Lucet cord is square, strong, and slightly springy. This month we will learn how to use a lucet fork to make your own lucet cord. When the day is over, you will be on your way to making your own cord and go home with a tool that you can use to make more! This program is intended for Children 7 – 12 years of age. Pre-registration is required for this event and it is limited to 15 children. You can pre-register your child using the ticket link below. This event is paid for through a grant from United States Steel – Edgar Thompson works.

1/20 Drop Spindle Yarn Spinning – Have you ever wondered how people made their own yarn in the 18th Century? Yarn was used for knitting and weaving for a long time and one of the most popular ways to make it was using a drop spindle. This month we will be learning how to use a drop spindle to make yarn, and each child will be able to take home their own drop spindle to that they can continue to make yarn. To prevent allergic reactions we will be using cotton roving for this program, but you can also use wool in the future. Pre-registration is required for this event and it is limited to 15 children. You can pre-register your child using the ticket link History is Fun – Drop Spindle Yarn Making (office.com).
