8/1/24: The Woodland Hills School District is continuing to make strides with fiscal responsibility. A year after issuing the first tax reduction to residents in district history, Woodland Hills now ranks 17th in Allegheny County in millage rate. In 2021, the district had the fourth highest rate in the county. Woodland Hills is one of only two districts among the 43 public school districts in the county to reduce its millage from 2021 to 2024. “Being a fiscally responsible district requires very difficult decisions from our administrators every year,” Woodland Hills School District superintendent Dr. Daniel Castagna said. “By taking this disciplined approach, we are demonstrating our commitment to our families by trying to provide them with some modest, sustained financial relief that was long overdue. At the same time, we’ve been able to increase our enrollment in each of the past two years, enhance the support and resources we offer, and provide new opportunities to students at all grade levels.” For more: https://www.whsd.net/apps/news/article/1946821?

11/12/24: The students of Dickson STEAM Academy have embarked on an important lesson of service, sacrifice, honor, and duty in preparation of Veterans Day 2024. The school partnered with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) to create a Field of Flags in front of the main entrance of the building. Students helped to place 620 flags on the front lawn, with each flag placed representing the $620 collected for disabled vets. This effort has transformed the outdoor space into a patriotic memorial, all to honor local veterans and raise critical funds to support our ill and injured military heroes. On Thursday, November 7, students had the opportunity to meet members of Alpha Company 876th Brigade Engineer Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard, which visited the school with one of their armored Humvees. Dickson teacher Mr. Gary Sandy serves in the unit, where he has the rank of sergeant first class. Students were able to sit inside the vehicle and learn more about the role it plays in serving the country, as well as its various capabilities. The project was spearheaded by Dickson teacher Mr. Adam Forgie. The students would like to thank Alpha Company 876 BEB Engineers from the PA National Guard, Jobe Funeral Home of Turtle Creek, WHEA, and all of those who donated and time supporting this effort.
